What we’re doing

Futures in Draft is an online editorial project, created by Storythings Ltd in collaboration with the Emerging Futures team and the communications and public engagement team within the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. The Emerging Futures Programme at JRF is a stream of work that aims to support and speed up the transition to more equitable and just futures by funding groups working towards transformative justice on the ground.

The project will feature communities, projects and organisations working towards transformative change.

Our intentions

We want this project to build connection with and visibility for the alternative futures sector long term. We hope that Futures in Draft will also serve as a space where new communities can discover the plethora of transformative work already happening in the field, while also driving further impact.

We want the space to be active, so that it can continue to evolve as a part of the alternative futures ecosystem and be relevant to and supportive of the ecosystem’s growth.

We are ascribing to a methodology of learning by doing and recognise that this will be an exploratory and experimental process.

You can read more about us, our editorial mission and who we’re working with to deliver the project on our About Us page.

Editorial oversight and methodology

Editorial oversight of the project lies with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and execution lies with Storythings. However, for this project to authentically reflect the ecosystem, we are actively working with individuals and organisations in the ecosystem on the content.

We are doing this by:

  • Holding continuous dialogue with practitioners, leaders and groups for advice, insights and guidance
  • Commissioning content directly from folks doing work in the ecosystem – this may include interviews about specific projects or research, as well as commissioning first person pieces about concepts or cultural insights
  • Running surveys with members of the ecosystem to better understand the types of content people are looking for as our socio-political and economic climate continues to change rapidly
  • Testing and adapting content with members from the ecosystem
  • Engaging with an advisory group consisting of eight practitioners and supporters deeply involved in the field

Futures in Draft will feature some organisations who have in the past or are currently receiving funding from JRF.

Editorial stance

There is a long history of transformative work being done to reimagine our systems all over the UK, and the world. Our editorial goal is for Futures in Draft to support in bringing this work into the spotlight, showcasing the progress being made and highlighting opportunities for others to join. The space is intended to be dynamic, evolving alongside the ecosystem it represents, staying relevant and impactful as it grows.

Our priority editorially is to commission work that supports, and directly relates to transformative futures. This includes work that is rooted in visioning, futuring and that celebrates the ideas and people moving away from current systems and binaries. In recognition of the movement being global, we are committed to commissioning writers and illustrators from around the world. Our aim for the content is for it to serve a range of purposes that include educational resources, tools for action, first person narratives, research and imagination work.

Our aim is for the work to be evergreen, and serve witness to the work being done within the alternative futures movement in the hope that it may guide and support future generations.

We are not a platform for reactive or reactionary storytelling, or for news coverage. Our intention is to make space for joy and solutions-based thinking as well as analysing and naming our current realities.

Pitching

At present, we are unable to take pitches due to a lack of internal capacity but as the platform and our audience grows, we will be looking to open up opportunities for this. For the time being we are commissioning content based on existing relationships we hold with those in the ecosystem. When we have more capacity, we hope to revisit and refine this approach to commissions.

Our stance on AI

All contributors commissioned are human and create unique, high-quality content. No generative AI tools are used to create the assigned work, unless with specific prior authorisation by Storythings Ltd. We will always disclose any use of generative AI tools. The use of automated tools for grammar, spell-check and transcription are permitted. Any content found to use generative AI without prior permission will be rejected by Storythings Ltd, with payment for the work withdrawn.

Funding

We recognise the need for longevity of these kinds of spaces. Funding for this project is intended to be for five years. Storythings Ltd will produce the project with funding by the Emerging Futures team at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

Representation

Part of our mission is to ensure we prioritise underrepresented communities as we recognise the numerous challenges they face engaging with the work of transformative change. As of November 2025, 97% of our writers and illustrators are from the global majority, 87% identify as women or non-binary, 57% are based outside of London to ensure representation across the UK. There are five contributors from outside of the UK: Thailand, Mexico, the Philippines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the US.

In our advisory group, 50% are from the global majority and 62.5% identify as women, with 75% based outside of London to ensure representation from all over the UK. Within the focus group who helped us test the initial batch of content, 62% are non-white. Though it is harder to track, we also aim to work with people from different socio-economic backgrounds, particularly underrepresented socio-economic backgrounds.

Contributor payment

All contributors are paid for their work fairly and in line with industry standard rates and recognition of the amount of work required. Our contributors are commissioned writers, illustrators, organisations featured in our stories, our advisory group and members of our focus group with whom we test content before publishing. We offer flat rates for commissioned written and illustrative work to ensure equity of payment regardless of name, age, experience or location.

Privacy

Please refer to our Privacy Policy for information about how we process and handle data and data subject rights.

This statement was created in November 2025. At a minimum, it will be reviewed annually and date stamped at the point of the next review.

Due Diligence

All pieces of content go through a process of internal editing and in all pieces, references are linked out to sources. Contributors for all of the pieces have lived experience and/or sector knowledge of the topics they are writing about. You can find out more about each contributor in their bios provided. Futures in Draft also works with a focus group to test the content and feedback is taken into consideration before publishing, in order to best serve our audience.
